Students in Business and Government Luncheon
Speakers: Lipman Middle School Students
Lipman Middle School eighth graders will present a presentation for each business and government site that they visited. The Students in Business Annual Luncheon is a viable partnership among the businesses in Brisbane, City of Brisbane Parks and Recreation Department, Lipman Middle School and the Brisbane Chamber of Commerce. This award winning program began in the early 1990s with the mission to help eighth graders learn more about job possibilities, responsibilities, and the education needed to attain these jobs. In May 2001, Lipman Middle School eighth grade teacher Maureen Boland was awarded the Kent Award for Innovative Programs for her leadership and guidance of the eighth grade students participating in Students in Business program. The Students in Business program allows middle school students to visit, observe and participate in the day-to-day activities of running a business. Students are divided into small groups. After several site visits, students write reports, create a speech and develop a display board for presentation at the Brisbane Chamber of Commerce Students in Business Annual Luncheon. The public speaking opportunity affords the middle school students a unique experience: students speak not only in front of their peers, but also business leaders in the community. This experience aids the student in developing clarity of thought in explaining what they have learned, as well as providing other students with a glimpse of the vast variety of businesses located in Brisbane. The value of this win-win program for students and businesses alike cannot be stressed enough. The Brisbane Chamber of Commerce is proud of this successful program that provides students hands on business experience, and contributes to students' confidence and self-esteem growth.
